Hunting Island

The four-mile-long island serves as a state park and
may be the state’s most visited beach with over 1 million visitors each year. Located near historic Beaufort, Hunting Island State Park is a natural paradise where visitors come to enjoy the serenity of nature.

History:

Once used as the hunting preserve for wealthy planters' families, Hunting Island was renowned for hunting parties that lasted several days. The island was a common layover for sailors and pirates, including the famous Blackbeard. In the 1930’s, the island was converted into a state park by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

What to Do:

The Hunting Island Lighthouse is the headline attraction on the island. Rebuilt in 1875 after being destroyed during the Civil War, this is the only lighthouse in the state open to the public. Hunting Island’s lagoon is perfect for those who want to get off the beaten path and away from the ocean waves. The lagoon is calm, quiet and offers an abundance of wildlife and freshwater fishing opportunities. Interestingly, two known movies, Forrest Gump and G.I. Jane, were shot at the lagoon. A fishing pier, nature trails and a 200 site campground are other inviting island activities.

Did You Know?

Hunting Island is a nesting ground for Loggerhead Turtles. In early summer, the huge turtles each lay hundreds of eggs into the sand of the beach. In order to protect the eggs from predators, volunteers on Hunting Island collect the eggs and take them to a hatching facility, ensuring the survival of a countless number of baby Loggerheads.
