Fripp Island
The most seaward of the South Carolina Sea Islands, Fripp Island is a wildlife sanctuary known for its relatively uncrowded feel. Off-season population is under 1,000 residents, though the island draws thousands of vacationers, honeymooners and eventual permanent residents each year.
History:
An ancient hunting ground of the Yamessee Indians, Fripp Island was acquired in Colonial times by swashbuckling English Capt. Johannes Fripp, a hero in battles against the French and Spanish while defending the Carolina Crown Colony for the English.
What to Do:
Just 19 miles east of historic Beaufort, SC, Fripp Island Golf & Beach Resort offers guests controlled access to the island, 3.5 miles of uncrowded beach, two championship golf courses, tennis courts, kayaking, and oceanfront, marsh and golf view accommodations. A seaside water park features a children's pool with alligator slides and giant frog fountain.
Great restaurants and a new food court await you on the island as well. Park your car once you arrive. The favorite mode of transportation on Fripp Island is a golf cart, which you can rent by the day or week.
Did You Know?
Legend has it that many pirates sailed the waters of Fripp Island and it was known to be a private pirate hideaway. It is said that Captain Fripp himself buried treasure here.
