Edisto Island
Edisto Island is a quiet, family-oriented island where nature is celebrated and commercialism is regulated. This relaxed island features many fantastic restaurants, numerous rental cottages and abundant wildlife.
History:
Evidence indicates that Edisto Island was inhabited by Native Americans at least 4,000 years ago and is among the older historic settlements in South Carolina. Spanish settlement came in the 1500s followed by the English in the 1600s. The English cultivation of Sea Island cotton in the 1700s produced great wealth. Plantations and houses, many on the National Register of Historic Places, are reminders of this period.
What to Do:
Edisto Beach State Park is the choice for guests who want to get back to nature. Stay in well-equipped cabins or in a campsite. Hunt for shells on the beach or enjoy the views along the salt marsh. Hike to Spanish Mount shell mound, used by Native Americans as much as 4,000 years ago. Many of Edisto Island’s plantation houses are open to the public in October during the Island Tour of Historic Plantations and churches.
