Isle of Palms
Relaxation or adventure? Pick your pleasure at Isle of Palms. Seven miles long and one mile wide, this all-in-one city offers activities for everyone from families to couples to seniors. The city takes great pride in its environmentally friendly atmosphere and even has several regulation councils designated for its award-winning beach.
History:
The city is thought to have been first inhabited by the Seewee Indians. Battles during both the Revolutionary and Civil Wars took place on and around IOP. In 1898, visitors to Isle of Palms came by way of water or a single railroad bridge. Originally opened as a recreational area for privileged parties at beach homes, this semi-tropical retreat, bordered by beautiful beaches and a network of marsh creeks, has lost none of its original charm.
What to Do:
Test your skill at beach volleyball, bodysurfing, shrimping or crabbing. Wild Dunes Resort on the northern tip of the island features outstanding accommodations, Tom Fazio-designed golf courses, tennis and a marina. At the marina, you can schedule boat rentals for a day on the open sea or a fishing charter to try and reel in redfish, tarpon and more.
Did You Know?
The Clean Beaches Council awarded Isle of Palms Beach with a Blue Wave Season Certification for 2007/2008, which recognizes the beach for its environmentally managed conditions. This is the sixth year in a row the beach has received the honor, and it will continue to fly the Blue Wave Flag as an indication of its pristine conditions.
